Flow Festival 2014 announces first headliners

flow2014Finland’s Flow Festival makes a welcome return this August with a broad selection of the moment’s most interesting music, stunning visual displays and unique festival diversions.

Outkast, will return to celebrate their 20th anniversary, and are one of over 30 artists included in the first line-up announcement for Flow 2014.

The festival features gloom-rock merchants The National, R&B soul artist Janelle Monáe and hip-hop from South Africa’s controversial Die Antwoord. Alongside Darkside, the joint project of Nicolas Jaar and multi­ instrumentalist Dave Harrington, U.S.­ based Blood Orange and the inimitable Charlie XCX. The event will also offer the return of shoegazers Slowdive, promising guitar­-driven indie rock from Mac DeMarco

, as well as a performance from Nina Persson, former singer of The Cardigans, who released her solo debut early this year. Electronic music will be a prominent fixture, featuring popular German export Paul Kalkbrenner and French producer Kavinsky (Outrun Live), as well as a frontline of Britsincluding Bonobo, Mercury Award nominee Jon Hopkins, techno sorcerer James Holden and Jamie xx – of The xxfame – all joining Flow. There will also be soulful electro from British duo Jungle, and trip-hop from Sweden’s Little Dragon, who will release their fourth studio album in May. Meanwhile, Joey Bada$$, Action Bronson and Pusha T will all bring a quality dose of U.S. hip-hop to the table. African rhythms will be served up by Malian Sahara-­blues outfit Tinariwen, Senegalese Mark Ernestus presents Jeri­Jeri and Les Ambassadeurs, a Malian super group includingSalif Keita, Amadou & Mariam’s Amadou Bagayoko, and Cheick Tidiane Seck. Flourishing Finnish artists Iisa, Death Hawks, Risto, Noah Kin, Jaakko Eino Kalevi, Eurocrack and Sound & Fury will all provide performances on home soil. In addition, Tuomo will perform his only Helsinki gig of the summer at Flow, while Magenta Skycode plays its only gig in Finland all year.
